Past Performance / Case Studies
Overview

It's one thing to discuss SOA / I.T. Transformation and Enterprise solutions and quite another to
successfully build and deliver them.  Vektrel's engineering teams have designed, developed and
released into production some of the largest, most challenging and highly successful SOA / I.T.
Transformation and Enterprise solutions in the I.T. engineering industry.

In addition to providing technical excellence in solution architecture, infrastructure and implementation,
Vektrel engineers have also provided the ongoing strategic leadership that is essential in ensuring
Fortune 500 I.T. organizations successfully transition to a service enabled, "composable" I.T. value
delivery model.

The case studies that follow were selected from Vektrel's portfolio of ongoing engagements as good
representations of the nature, scope and scale of the projects our engineering teams deliver.  Each
case study is a cursory overview of Vektrel's performance within a large-scale I.T. initiative.  More case
studies and more depth are available upon request.

Case 1
Client -- Fortune 500 company.   Global I.T. enterprise.
Challenge -- A client was growing rapidly (almost $1 billion annually).  Their I.T. enterprise needed to be transformed to support rapidly evolving
business demands and pressures.  The decision was made to proceed with a large-scale I.T. transformation initiative with two key strategic goals.  The
first was to significantly improve the I.T. organization's speed and agility in delivering new business functionality to the enterprise. The second key goal
was to dramatically reduce I.T. operational costs.   This transformation initiative was launched as a set of concurrent I.T. projects designed to transition
the organization to a service based, composable value delivery model.  The concurrent I.T. projects were as follows:
Service Oriented Architecture and Infrastructure Foundations
Service Hosting Platform Foundations
End-to-End SOA Security Architecture
SOA Network Infrastructure
Enterprise Portal (Composite Application Foundation)
Identity and Authorization Management (IAM) Pilot
Process Automation Foundations (BPM / BPEL Foundations)
Enterprise Application Integration Foundations (EAI)
Composite Business Applications Design / Development
Vektrel Performance -- Vektrel assumed overall architectural leadership of this I.T. transformation initiative and architectural and implementation
leadership for most of the constituent projects.  The sweeping nature of this transformation required holistic engineering across multiple technical,
administrative and financial domains.  Throughout the duration of this initiative, Vektrel provided foundational architectural input to all transformation
projects and led the design, development and implementation of all SOA / EAI / BPM / Composite Application related initiatives.  After a 14 month project
cycle, Vektrel released these SOA foundations to I.T. production.  They have subsequently become the cornerstone of I.T. value delivery to the
business.  Vektrel continues to offer strategic architectural and implementation support to this ongoing initiative as this transformation moves through
phases of SOA maturity.
Case 2
Client -- Fortune 500 company.   Global I.T. enterprise.
Challenge -- A client decided to transition their financial and business process systems to new foundations (e.g. ERP migration, etc).  This transition
would impact virtually all systems within this global I.T. enterprise and it would require a huge process and data integration initiative to transition
enterprise-wide business processes and data models to these new foundations.
Vektrel Performance -- Vektrel assumed overall architectural and implementation leadership of this large-scale I.T. transformation initiative.  Vektrel
designed, developed and implemented a leading-edge SOA based solution that coupled event-driven architecture (EDA) and service based integration
(EAI) with business process automation (BPM / BPEL) and strategic data services.  Additionally, Vektrel designed and implemented an end-to-end SOA
security architecture for this migration that was scalable to the global enterprise and accommodated SOA federation capabilities.  Vektrel
implementation teams used these foundations to design, develop and deliver over 70 mission critical services that made this transition a reality.  These
included event driven integration services, process automation services and data / information services.  After a 14 month project cycle, Vektrel
delivered phase 1 of this solution which was released into I.T. production as a highly successful turn-key solution.  This transition continues to be one of
the most successful SOA based integration solutions of its scale in the I.T. industry.  Vektrel continues to provide business process transformation
leadership to this effort as it moves through phases of SOA and business process automation maturity.
Case 3
Client -- Fortune 500 company.   Global I.T. enterprise.
Challenge -- A client had a number of scattered information architecture initiatives (e.g.: data warehouses, data marts, operational data stores, etc) that
fragmented business information across numerous data models while increasing operational costs.  The client decided to consolidate all such
information stores into a common, enterprise information architecture providing a single authoritative data warehouse and operational data store
supporting mission specific data marts, SOA data services and business intelligence portals.

Vektrel Performance -- Vektrel was asked to provide the information architecture leadership to drive this data consolidation effort. Vektrel architects
designed a solution that successfully consolidated I.T. information sources and provided an authoritative foundation for I.T. business processes and I.T.
business intelligence portals.  The solution reduced operational costs and positioned the enterprise data warehouse to integrate with and support the
complementary I.T. SOA initiative.  Vektrel architects also designed an end-to-end security architecture that successfully addressed all information
assurance requirements.
Case 4
Client -- Insurance Company
Challenge -- Our client's rapid growth, coupled with the insurance industry's movement toward online services collectively created a need to transform
I.T. foundations to a more agile model for value / service delivery.   Our client made the decision to initiate a gradual transformation to a service based
value delivery model and a "composable" enterprise architecture (SOA foundations).

Vektrel Performance -- In early 2008, Vektrel was asked to provide a SOA implementation team responsible for defining, developing and delivering a
set of core I.T. services foundational to this transformation effort.  This initiative requires defining and implementing initial service infrastructure
foundations, initial integration foundations and developing core services that integrate business processes and data from numerous disparate
insurance applications.  It also requires extracting and service enabling processes and data currently embedded within "siloed" insurance applications.
This initiative is moving forward as a blended open source and COTS SOA solution architecture.
